NEW ARRIVAL Johann Georg Stauffer is regarded as one of the finest luthiers of the romantic period, and during the early 1800’s both CF Martin and CF Bauer were students of his. This 1840’s example is very much in the style of Stauffer, featuring a Spruce top with flamed Maple back and sides, Ebony fingerboard and moustache bridge, the famous Stauffer scroll headstock with six on a side tuners, and beautifully engraved silver plate on the rear. The multiple body bindings are a sign of real quality, and the Abalone inlays are beautiful. The guitar appears to be all original - just two tiny pieces of Abalone are missing - and has recently had a neck reset so it plays very well, and the original tuners work just fine. The body length is 36 inches. The scale length is 23 and 1/4 inches. Upper bout 9 inches. Lower bout 11 and 1/2 inches. The nut 1 and 3/4 inches. The guitar’s in surprisingly good condition for it’s age, just two repaired top cracks - one below the fingerboard extension and one below the bridge in line with the G string. There’s also a repaired crack below the headstock silver plate. When original Stauffer guitars sell for between £7000 - £8000, this represents a very affordable way to get such a historically important guitar plus, thanks to the neck reset, one which plays really well. The guitar even comes in an original 19th century coffin case.
